In the speed test, we rendered 10,000 items in a list in React and used React’s Profiler to measure rendering speed of each option.
Styled Components
Styled Components are known for their efficiency. They generate minimal CSS and only apply styles to the components that are actually used on a given page. This leads to fast rendering as unnecessary styles are avoided. Render time took 148ms.
Tailwind CSS
Tailwind CSS takes a different approach by generating a large number of utility classes. While this can lead to more CSS being loaded initially, the highly optimized utility classes result in fast rendering, especially on subsequent page views. Render time took 85ms.
Bootstrap
Bootstrap, with its pre-designed components and styles, can be slower to render compared to more minimalistic frameworks. However, it’s important to note that rendering speed can be improved by selectively including only the necessary Bootstrap components, reducing the overall CSS size. Render time took 77ms.
In our speed test the popular frameworks that utilized CSS like Tailwind and Bootstrap performed better than frameworks like Styled Components that had Javascript inject CSS into each component. This means that using pure CSS frameworks (like Tailwind and Bootstrap) will be about 63% faster than styled components.
